Activision Accused of Selling AI-Generated Skins in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Without Disclosure

Activision Blizzard has come under fire for reportedly selling AI-generated weapon skins in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 without properly disclosing their use of generative AI technology. According to a recent investigation by WIRED, the company began integrating AI tools like GPT-3.5 into their game development pipeline in early 2023, and by late 2023, these AI-generated cosmetics were available for purchase in the game’s store.

The specific skin in question is believed to be part of the Yokai’s Wrath bundle, which was released in December 2023 for 1,500 COD Points (approximately $15). However, Activision did not mention anywhere on the store page that the skins were created using AI.

The Yokai’s Wrath bundle included an Operator skin, a weapon Blueprint, a Calling Card, a Weapon sticker, and a loading screen. It remains unclear which exact items in the bundle were AI-generated, or if the entire bundle was created using artificial intelligence.

This revelation has raised concerns among players and industry professionals about the ethical implications of using AI in game development without proper disclosure. Many are worried about the potential impact on the creative process and the ability of AI to replicate the unique styles and aesthetics that human artists bring to the table.

The report also alleges that Activision employees, particularly 2D artists, were “forced” to use AI to aid in their work, and that the company promoted the use of AI throughout the business. This comes shortly after Microsoft, which acquired Activision Blizzard for $69 billion in 2022, laid off 1,900 employees from its gaming business.

While some industry leaders, such as Sony’s Asad Qizilbash, have expressed optimism about the potential of AI to enhance player experiences and make game development more efficient, others like The Witcher voice actor Doug Cockle have expressed caution and frustration at the growing presence of AI within the video game industry.

As the use of AI in game development continues to evolve, it will be crucial for companies like Activision to be transparent about their use of this technology and to ensure that they are not compromising the quality or integrity of their products in the process. Players deserve to know what they are purchasing, and artists deserve to have their work recognized and valued.
