Summer Game Fest 2024: Hits and Misses

Summer Game Fest 2024 wrapped up with a mixed bag of
announcements. Here’s a breakdown:

The Good:

  • Big
    Reveals:
While Geoff Keighley cautioned against super high
expectations, some heavy hitters landed. Civilization 7’s reveal sent
shivers down strategy fans’ spines, and the co-op Lego Horizon Adventures
promises a delightful twist on a beloved franchise.
  • Indie
    Gems:
The show wasn’t just AAA titles. Indie devs got their shine too,
with intriguing projects like No More Room in Hell 2 (spiritual successor
to Left 4 Dead) and the gorgeous Neva catching eyes.
  • Diversity:
From the frantic beat-em-up Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind to the serene
platformer Neva, the showcase offered something for a wide range of gamer
    tastes.

The Not-So-Good:

  • Lack
    of Blockbusters:
Some viewers felt the show lacked the star power of
past years. We didn’t see the next big titles from Sony, Microsoft, or
    Nintendo.
  • Mobile
    Games and Indies?
While indies deserve attention, some fans felt the
show leaned too heavily on them and mobile game promotions, which didn’t
    quite match the hype.

Overall:

Summer Game Fest 2024 wasn’t a slam dunk, but it wasn’t a
total miss either. It offered a decent mix of reveals, with some exciting prospects
for the future. Keep an eye out for upcoming showcases from individual
publishers – they might hold the true blockbusters.
